Last November, friends of the track-and field club asked me
if I would take photos for a calendar they could use for a big fundraiser.
Tonight (the 9th of Mai) they will start running from Paris to Rotterdam……..yes 540 km, 329 miles
and they will arrive at the Coolsingel (centre of Rotterdam) sometime during Monday the 12th of Mai.
They are a team of 8 runners (taking turns running one at a time for 10km each time, day and night) and 4 helpers by bike.
The most difficult part will be to get some rest and sleep during those days.
They have a big truck with them in which they can sleep and the most important:
there will be a private cook to prepare special meals. There will be a 'mental' coach for the difficult hours.
The Roparun is the longest non-stop relay race in the world: it's not only a unique running event but also has a unique goal:
It is a large fundraiser for people with cancer, to give those families short vacations in which they try to have some happy times together.
In temperatures of 5C (41F) and in just 2 hours without rain I was able to shoot these pictures.
We tried to do all seasons….'summer' was the most hard and fun to do.
They sold the 500 calendars in no time…
With this collage I like to wish them good luck. I know what kind of hard work they have put in.
These are well-trained athletes able to run the marathon within the 4 hours.

Holy cow, that's a long run! There are some nutters here who will do 100 mile runs (no relay), but this is crazier. Nice work on the calendar. I hope you had to good sense to stop here instead of running with them.
Picturit: Martin, wouldn't it be great to be part of this unique event but I am well aware of my limited ability of running the really long distances,I have deep respect for those who can. I am glad thought that I am able to run longer than one hour without stoppong.
My thoughts will be with them this weekend. Astrid
What a story! I told you I knew about the Nymagen walk but this is more incredible. Good luck to all!
Picturit: Thank you Mary, the Nijmegen is walking a certain distance in 4 days in a row, this is Running and which team will be the FASTED from Paris to Rotterdam, I know it is the thought behind it, but being an athlete....it still is competion!!!
Astrid.
WOW that's a big run. I can't even imagine running around the corner. LOL
Very nice collage... I wish all the runners the best!
Picturit:
We had so much fun with the making of these picture, thak you for the best wishes. Astrid.
LOL at Helen.
I know this is not the first publication of your photos! You go, Girl!
Picturit: You are so right, it stands for the thought behind it, at a meeting some of the patients were in tears because of the great effort it will be for the runners...but I know the runners think it is harder to go through the treatment of cancer than the few ours of 'pain' while running...it is about helping and thinking of those who are less fortunate with their health.
Yes, you have one of the calanders, it was fun to do...and Ginnie thanks again for helping me out with some parts of the text... Have a great weekend. Astrid
Good luck to them, and well done to you for helping them raised funds with a fun calendar.
Picturit: Thanks Nigel, I was just too gald that I could help them doing this fun stuff,
have a great weekend. Astrid.
I only run when my car is broken and some big guy is chasing me
If this collage of pictures are what one can expect of the calendar, it is going to be a fun one. Great work.
Picturit: No, I will not participate, the ones that run is the marathon-group..the most I do is 12 km.
Only the top right is not in the calender, the rest and some more are. Thank you Louis, please have a great weekend
This is tremedous, asTRID. I particularly enjoy the bottom row of pictures ie the near naked women, the bicycle accident, the woman being sick and throwing horse muck in the air...very funny. I refuse to comment about the top right picture. Just finished hot water with lemon juice and a slice of ginger. Ready for koffie now!
Picturit: I am glad you had your Koffie this early....it really was fun, the top right is just one of my favourites, while taking the pictures I wondered, but when those two started running around and yelling...I am Harry Potter....on the Nimbus 2001 I knew for sure....they are fruitcakes....but very unharmful...like me....
Have a great weekend, in the morning we hit the road for Texel... so I will not join you for breakfast, I might be able to be just befor suppertime to visit you... Astrid.
A great collage!
These peope surely have fun!
Picturit: Wim, you know as well as I do that 'runners' can be different sometimes, but in a very pleasant way..
Have a great weekend. Astrid.
I have a great respect for what they will be doing as from tonight!
You did a great job for the calendar Astrid. I really like your collage. Have a great weekend.
Picturit: This is a unique run, me to, I have great espect for them, thank you for your kind words.
I will be going on a vacation..thank Richard, you too, a great weekend. Astrid.
This is a wonderful way to raise money Astrid and you have done the club VERY proud with your calendar. The money raised will be appreciated by the fund and the recipients, I am sure of that
You must feel proud of yourself, because I do(feel proud of you) Great collage Musketeer
Picturit: Hey Musketeer, thank you for your kind and dear words, they are in my thoughts this weekend, it is a pity I will not tbe able to join them in Rotterdam
Have a nice weekend... Astrid.

Astrid.
Great initiative...

Picturit: Thanks Chantal, I will be on Texel, so no complaining from my side.
You have a great weekend too. Astrid.
It's a very good goal, so smart. And their dedication is inspiring. The recipients must be deeply touched. I love how they seem to have a lot of fun too, besides the hard work. The photo of them throwing leaves up is just great. The whole collage is brilliant. You too are doing your part, Astrid. Wonderful.
Picturit: Thank you Ruth, the leaves is Autumn...I gave Ginnie a calander, it was so much fun in this type of weather, to have all seasons in 2 hours, when we were finished we had lots of rain again.
They are running for a very good cause, I think it must be great, at night when they go through the towns, there is music and parties going on and they will cheer for these runners. It will be tough but rewarding. Have a great weekend, BTW how is Kuifje doing....I hope it is doing fine Astrid.
Lol, nice funny photo's you show us here!!!
Picturit: Thanks Robbie, it was great fun to capture these great runners.
Have a nice weekend Astrid
Great collage Astrid, these guys have got more stamina than I have ever had. I hope you enjoy your involvement with the event.
Picturit: I loved taking pictures, it was so much fun, my thought will be with them this weekend, it is too bad I cannot be with them as they arrive in Rotterdam, I had my vacation already planned, but via internet I can keep track with them.
Have a great weekend. Astrid.
Brilliant collection of pictures and well done with the calender. They deserve to raise huge sums of money.
One little thing. I used to think the Dutch were a sane and level headed nation. I now realise you are all nutty as fruitcakes!
Picturit: Bill, the very sportive ones are fruitcakes....and I consider myself as a sportive type as well....
Thank you so much for your kind words. Have a great weekend. Astrid.

Hilarious, Astrid - I particularly like the one where they are throwing the mud in the air. You captured that very well. Great to be involved in such a good cause. I wish them luck.
Ingrid
Picturit: Thank you for the best wishes, the mud/leaves is autumn....the top right are two Harry Potters on the Nimbus 2001...they are some fruitcakes, we laughed a lot....
Have a great weekend. Astrid.
Excellent Astrid - I hope they complete their run safely, with no injuries and in record time ;o)
Presume you are now off on holiday - have a good break ;o)
Picturit: Thank you Mike, that is what I mailed to them to, please make sure you all arrive in one piece.
Tomorrow morning we will be on our way, it is only a two hour drive to the ferry to Texel and Jeroen will be joining us too...who knowes what we will find this time...meremaids???? Have a great weekend. Astrid.
Wow, congratulations to you Astrid, and my goodness, well done to those runners too. A heck of a challenge for a good cause
Picturit: Thank you Ellie for your kind words, I just checked the website to follow them....they are 74 of the 253 teams and on schedule....they arrive in Rotterdam on monday afternoon.
Have a great weeknd. Astrid.
These people look almost as fit as Chad & myself. Of course we are eminently more sensible!
Picturit: I knew it..I just knew it....you must be fit, to do all the running behind MRS. Rat and he sheep..
Have a great weekend. Astrid.
Like the composition of your collage, excellent work. Hope the fund raiser goes well it sound like a very good cause. Best of luck!

Extremely difficult task ahead of the team .. i wish them all the very best of luck. Great collage Astrid. :o) John
Picturit: Thanks John, I just saw they all arrived in Rotterdam, 259 teams.
Astrid.
I used to run marathons, but cannot recall it was ever fun in the hilarious "slapstick" way.
For me the training and the running was a solitary thing, by choice...perhaps that is why. It is a great montage, Astrid...technically excellent, and full of the "joy of life".
Picturit: Ray, most of my running I do alone, once a week I go to the track and field club where I am a member, we run together and to all kinds of exercises to become stronger and faster, that is fun, some of us are real fruitcakes, I love to joke around with them....I am impressed that you did marathons, I used to do, long ago, 1/4 triathlons...that was real nice.
Thank you for your kind words as ever. Astrid.
This is a funny collage. Nice !
Picturit: Thanks, I just saw that they arrived in Rotterdam....deep respect for all these runner of 259 teams.
Astrid
Funny stuff! i like the bottom right corner shot the best. Nice job!
Picturit: That is autumn, there were a lot of leaves on the ground, it was hilarious,
thanks David for your kind words. Astrid.
3 days of running? are you insane??? after 3 blocks I'm panting and crying for a doctor!
Picturit: erm...erm....I think it is time for some workout for you
Astrid. |
